The seating arrangement was different this time around. All the tables had been removed and the chairs were set up in rows so the performance hall could accommodate a much larger crowd. Most of the people who attended the first concert were fans of the old band, Tightrope, or just of Marcus himself. Looking out over the space I guessed that this time around there would be a lot more people who were merely looking for a distraction.

Katie and I were able to acquire front row seats, seeing as how we were not far back in the line. We were just in the right place at the right time, I thought. I subconsciously reached down and touched the leather cuff around my wrist. Good luck? Somehow it did not feel that way.

Katie noticed the action and looked up at me with a raised eyebrow.

“It’s nothing,” I lied. I diverted my attention from her and turned it toward the giant curtain concealing the stage. My eyes passed over it in order to find something more interesting to focus upon, but then quick as lightning they flashed back, captivated by its depth of color. Then a sort of trance, a weird stream-of-consciousness thing happened.

Blue, I thought. Deep blue. No, not deep but dark. Dark, yes, dark. Dark, like what? Dark like the night. Night, yes, like a deep night. Deep. Deep, like what? Like the sea, of course, the sea, the sea that stretches and bounds at the shore, the beach where people swim. Then at last I arrived at: Swim, yes, swim in the sea. Then without realizing it I said loud enough for Katie to hear, “When the gold goes swimming, they will come looking for trouble.”

Betraying a hint of alarm, Katie asked, “What did you say?”

I froze, knowing I was caught and there was no way out of it. Knowing the recent devastating effects to our relationship when I had bottled up my concerns and hid them from Katie, I saw that the only way forward was to come right out with it.

I explained, “It’s a strange phrase I’ve had pop into my head a few times over the last couple of days. I don’t know where it came from or what it means but it just came back to me when I was looking at the curtain.”

“Do you think it’s…” she trailed off not wanting to state the obvious.

I thought about her unfinished question, pretty sure I knew where she had been headed with it, then said, “Yeah, probably. Not sure how, but it’s inscrutable enough to fit right in with the rest, isn’t it?”

She nodded in agreement and took a paranoid look behind and around her.

We sat for another forty-five minutes or so, which felt much longer, before the lights went out and the crowd came to a hush. When it was fully dark in the room that strange phrase ran through my mind again and my heart jumped in response. Then I grew anxious. I thought my emotions would settle quickly but they did not.
